About Me
As a child growing up in Hong Kong I was very focused on my ballet, singing and piano training. I also had the great fortune to be a member of the Hong Kong Children's Choir and the Yip's Children's Choir with whom I performed in concert tours throughout North America and Europe. I began my professional ballet training at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts and at the Beijing Ballet Institute. To further my development I came to Toronto to train with the National Ballet School of Canada. My extensive training in all three forms of ballet techinique (Vaganova, Checcetti & RAD) gave me a solid foundation for my dance career.
I began my professional career as a principal dancer with the Ontario Ballet Theatre where I performed in such productions as Beauty & The Beast and The Nutcracker. I went on to become a principal dancer with The Empire State Ballet in the United States where I performed in numerous productions including Hansel & Gretal and Lac Me. I also became a principal dancer with The Panda Dance Theatre in Toronto (later known as the Xing Dance Theatre) where I performed in many critically acclaimed productions such as Sha Tu and Emperor & I. It was during my time with this company where I came under the tutelage of renowned choreographer Xing Bang Fu and learned how to fuse together classical and contemporary ballet with traditional Chinese dance techniques.
Perhaps the most difficult decision I have had to make during my career occurred when I was offered a contract to become a principal dancer with Canada's foremost contemporary ballet company, Ballet British Columbia, while I was performing in the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera. The decision was very difficult as I had long dreamed of dancing with Ballet British Columbia but I ended up declining their offer for personal reasons and my career focused more on musical theatre thereafter.
Eventually I left The Phantom of the Opera to join the most successful musical theatre production in German history, Cats, in Hamburg, Germany (which we sang in German). Upon my return to Canada I rejoined the Toronto production of The Phantom of the Opera in the final year of its historic ten year run. Some of my other notable musical theatre credits include: two productions of The King & I (Theatre Aquarius and Huron Country Playhouse) where I played the role of Eliza and served as Assistant Choreographer for both; the Dora award winning production of the new opera Iron Road (Tapestry); the title role in Golden Lotus (ASCAP/Disney); Angie in Tiananmen Dreams where I also served as Assistant Choreographer; the dancer in Fiddle on Fire which I choreographed and Starbright which I both performed in and choreographed. I have also returned to Xing Dance Theatre upon occasion to perform in such critically acclaimed productions as Goddesses of the Silk Road, The Nutcracker and Rice. Other notable performances include the lead role in the opening number of the 2006 Miss Chinese Toronto Pageant (Fairchild Television) and my role as a Red Guard Dancer in the feature film, M. Butterly, directed by David Cronenburg.
I began teaching youngsters in 1999 when I taught musical theatre at the Marth Hicks School of Ballet in Toronto. In 2000, I became the Artistic Director of Yip's Musical Theatre Group of Canada. I teach, direct and choreograph their musical theatre program and performances which have included: The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, Santa Ma Jazz, Starbright, Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Mulan and of course The Phantom of the Opera and Cats among others. I have also enjoyed coaching young performers to success at the Kiwanis Music Festival and elite figure skaters on their ballet and performance technique.
